The Golden times have never ended
Our El Dorado house blend celebrates the first year since Coffea Espression opening. This coffee brings out a bit of Colombia’s mythical past and present-day treasures as its brightness and rich cup are their major attributes.
El Dorado is a legend that originates from colonial times in the central region of Colombia. The imagination of Spanish conquerors was such that they believed about the existence of a shiny town filled with houses and roads made of gold somewhere around central Colombia. The legend involved the Muiscas who were an indigenous tribe settled in the central highlands of present-day Bogotá and Lake Guatavita (35 miles northeast of Bogotá).

The Guatavita Lake.
During the coronation ritual of a new leader (called Zipa), the Muiscas organise a unique ceremony. The heir of the chiefdom, son of a sister from the past chieftain who was previously purified by doing a six-year fast inside a cave, would be covered in gold dust and float to the centre of the Guatavita Lake on a reed raft along his ministers and head priests facing backwards. There, the golden ruler gave him the sceptre and just after the first sunshine people threw gold and emeralds to the Lake as a sacrifice to their gods. After the ritual, the new leader would immerse himself in the Guatavita Lake, washing off the gold dust and started its chiefdom, while the Muiscas celebrated with dance, music, and drinking chicha (maize fermented drink).

El Dorado legend sparked numerous expeditions through Colombia where European explorers were eager to find that golden city. These include Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada, the founder of Bogotá, and Sir Walter Raleigh who conducted two expeditions from England.
These quests for El Dorado drove much of the exploration of northern South America, though they were frequently marked by tragedy, with explorers facing harsh terrains, disease spreading, and conflict with indigenous peoples. There were also attempts to drain the lake and recover gold treasures. Some genuine Muisca treasures can be seen at the Museo del Oro in Bogotá which houses the largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold work worldwide.
El Dorado blend combines three different varieties of Arabica coffee. A Red Catuaí which imparts body and tangy texture surrounded by a sugarcane sweetness from the Castillo-Colombia varieties and the striped bourbon that adds a hint of cocoa liqueur. A perfect combination for those who seek to feed the hopper with good beans to deliver a creamy espresso, but this can also be enjoyed as a black filtered coffee.
While explorers searched for gold, the ‘real gold’ is the coffee. We hope you enjoy it as this is a limited edition coffee.
